REAR BRAKE INSPECTION.This task covers:InspectionINITIAL SETUPToolsTool kit, general mechanic’s: automotiveEquipment ConditionTM or ParaPara 5-74Condition DescriptionBrake drum removed.a.Inspection.(1)Inspect wheel cylinder (1) and backing plate(2) for evidence of leakage. Replace/repairwheel cylinder or brake lines if required.Parts of the brake assembly may be coatedwith asbestos dust; breathing this dust canharm personnel.Use a filter mask approved for useagainst asbestos dust.Never use compressed air or dry brushto clean these assemblies.Use an industrial type vacuum cleanerwith a high-efficiency filter system toremove dust.Use water and a soft bristle brush orcloth to remove dirt or mud.Do not allow grease or oil to contactbrake linings. Linings can absorbgrease and oil, causing early glazingand very poor braking action. Failureto do so could cause serious injury ordeath to personnel.(2)Inspect brake linings (3) for glazing.Replace or repair brake shoes if required.(3)Measure thickness of brake linings (3). Ifbrake linings are less than 1/8 inch (3 mm)thick at thinnest point, replace/repair brakeshoes.4-396
